Tokyo’s official Design Manhole Digital Rally runs from July 10, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Prize applications close earlier, on January 31, 2027. It combines decorative covers with sightseeing stops across Tokyo.

Let the covers choose a different turn

It is easy to cross a city while barely noticing the pavement. A manhole rally gives you a reason to slow down: a character outside your usual route, a local emblem you cannot quite place, a small public space you might otherwise pass. The best reward can be the neighborhood you discover between the stamps.

Tokyo’s government-backed campaign reaches all 62 municipalities. That breadth is an invitation to choose somewhere interesting, rather than a suggestion to attempt everything. Start with the part of Tokyo you already plan to visit, then see which rally stops fit naturally around it.

Register before setting out

The official site provides free registration using SMS authentication. Stamps use the phone’s location, and the campaign combines manhole and tourism stops. Open the organizer’s site on the phone you intend to take and complete its setup before you leave.

If your number is overseas, confirm that registration works before making a journey dependent on collecting digital stamps; the reviewed guidance does not establish compatibility with every foreign number. Keep enough battery for both the rally and your return journey.

This campaign has its own account, stamps and rules. Visiting a cover in Manhole Quest does not automatically register a stamp in Tokyo’s official rally. You can enjoy the artwork without turning every visit into a competition.

Two dates worth saving

The rally remains open into March, but prize entries close in January. Save the earlier deadline if prizes matter to you. The organizer also limits prize shipping to Japan, so an overseas visitor should not assume a reward can be sent home.

Keep the official campaign page handy for participation details. If a prize matters to your plans, check the requirements before collecting stamps so you know what to save and when to apply.

Build a day around a neighborhood

Choose one anchor: a station, a museum reservation, or a place you want to eat. Compare nearby rally pins and select a handful that leave time to look around. A route becomes more memorable when a cover leads into the surrounding place instead of immediately back to the next pin.

Before committing to a stop, check whether it is an outdoor cover or a tourism venue with its own opening hours. Leave some space in the plan for queues, rain or simply finding a street worth exploring. A small finished walk is more enjoyable than a long list you spend the day chasing.
