A railway arrival, a manga encounter
There is something fitting about finding a story of travel near a railway station. You have just arrived somewhere, and a small image in the pavement invites another journey. Kitakyushu’s Galaxy Express 999 covers make that connection easy to enjoy, whether you know the characters well or are meeting them for the first time.
The municipality links the project to Leiji Matsumoto, a manga artist associated with the city, and to the anniversary of its sewer system. That pairing is part of the appeal. A piece of practical infrastructure carries an imaginative world, while the anniversary lettering brings the viewer back to the city underneath it.
Nine designs does not mean nine locations
Use the city’s installation map alongside the directory. Its total counts physical locations separately from artwork designs, so a repeated image does not necessarily mean you have reached the wrong place. Note both the character and the setting when you record a discovery.
The airport entries are not an extra block on a Kokura walking route. Treat them as an arrival or departure opportunity when your transport already takes you there. For a station-based outing, choose the central cluster and resist stretching a relaxed walk into a transport exercise just to complete the list.
Maetel’s card and the museum connection
The city lists the Maetel Manhole Card at Kitakyushu Manga Museum and offers both Japanese and English versions, subject to stock. Its distribution table notes the museum’s Tuesday closure, normally moving to the following day when Tuesday is a holiday. Consult the linked current schedule before setting out.
Keep three things separate in your plan: the lid’s location, the card counter and any museum exhibition you want to enter. A card’s coordinates are not a guarantee that the handout desk is at the same point, and card distribution does not settle exhibition admission arrangements. Checking each detail makes the visit feel easy once you arrive.
Notice the city between the characters
Try pairing every close-up with a wider photograph of the street. It changes the collection from a character checklist into a record of your own route. Later, you can remember which cover you encountered first and what you were doing when you found it.
The municipal directory includes other design families, including Giravanz Kitakyushu and Wakamatsu’s local themes. They can provide another chapter if your trip takes you that way. Check their map locations independently; being listed on the same city website does not place them all within the same neighborhood.
A small walk with a generous ending
Build your outing around the time you actually have. Before a train, one well-located cover may be enough. With a free afternoon, a museum visit and a few street discoveries can complement each other. Leave a margin around your departure time and make the final stop somewhere you can enjoy without watching the clock.
The lasting pleasure is the connection: artwork, a working city and the moment you noticed both. You do not need a complete set for that.

Questions
Are the airport covers part of the Kokura walk?
No. Plan the airport separately, ideally when it fits your arrival or departure.
Is there an English Maetel Manhole Card?
The city lists an English version. Check current availability and the distribution venue’s calendar before visiting.
How can I avoid confusing a repeated design with the wrong location?
Compare both the artwork and the installation point on the city’s map. Design totals and physical-location totals are different counts.
