Let the rest of your day choose the route
The nicest manhole walk often grows out of something else you wanted to do. A game, a garden visit or a pause by the water gives you a destination; the covers add details to the journey. In Fukuoka, that approach makes more sense than drawing one long line through every design on a map.
Start with the neighborhood you already plan to visit and open the city’s official design directory. These suggestions are separate starting points, not a timed circuit. Pick one, keep your eyes open between stops and let the street contribute a few discoveries that were never on your list.
For baseball fans: the approach to the dome
The city lists fourteen Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks mascot designs between Tojinmachi Station and Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka. That gives a baseball-centered day a natural pavement theme.
Our suggestion is to enjoy the variation: compare expressions, arrangements and the way a character fits inside a circle. If you are attending a game, leave your cover stops flexible around the main event. A favorite design photographed calmly is a better memory than a complete checklist gathered in a hurry.
For animal and plant lovers: the garden approach
Eleven designs using animal and plant photographs lie between Yakuin-odori Station and Fukuoka Zoo and Botanical Garden, according to the municipal inventory. Their photographic treatment offers a different visual experience from the cartoon-style mascot route.
Try comparing how an image changes when it becomes part of the pavement. Look at the crop, the surrounding lettering and what catches your eye first. For children, choosing a favorite before reaching the main attraction can give the walk its own small adventure. Check the attraction’s separate admission arrangements if you intend to enter.
For arts, gateways and the port
Four Civic Hall covers are placed on the sidewalk from Tenjin underground mall’s East 1a exit toward the hall. The city also identifies a Hakata Sennenmon design beside the gate and a Port Tower anniversary design near the tower. These are useful individual landmarks to build around, rather than one continuous route.
Choose the stop that belongs to your plans. At a landmark-themed cover, take a second photograph that records the setting as well as the disc. Later, that wider view can explain the connection far better than another tightly cropped circle.
The quiet challenge of finding a heart
FUKU 51 MANHOLE takes a subtler approach. For the sewerage service’s eighty-eighth anniversary in 2018, hearts were incorporated into the city design at fifty-one sidewalk locations. The official project page offers a photo book to help visitors find them.
Use that photo book as an invitation to look more carefully. You might make one heart the aim of a morning rather than trying to complete the whole project. The interesting part is the shift in attention: after looking for a tiny detail in one cover, you may start seeing other patterns you had ignored.
Save the pages for your chosen area before leaving. The city directory was updated in August 2026, but that date is not the installation date of every design. These are established places to explore, with room to enjoy the neighborhood around them.

Questions
Is this one continuous walking route?
No. Choose a neighborhood or theme; this guide does not combine the locations into a single timed walk.
Where should I look for official location information?
Use the municipal design directory for the themed areas and the FUKU 51 project’s photo book for heart covers.
Are these all new covers from 2026?
No. A recent update to the directory does not establish when each physical cover was installed.
