From a game memory to a real street
A favorite game character can carry years of memories. Encountering that character during a trip gives those memories a new setting: a station entrance, a civic building, a place with its own everyday life. Saga’s latest cover project makes that connection especially personal because fans helped choose who would appear.
The prefecture reports that its April–May government crowdfunding campaign received 216 donations totaling ¥7.52 million. Donor voting selected the two characters. The resulting covers are planned additions, not confirmed installations as of this article’s October 3 check.
Two characters, two different schedules
The female Final Emperor comes from Romancing SaGa 2; Ellen is a protagonist from Romancing SaGa 3. The prefecture assigns a date to the first installation and leaves the second under coordination. A future visit should keep those statuses separate.
If you are planning around the October date, wait for an official completion or visitor-access update before treating the cover as a guaranteed stop. An installation target alone does not tell you when barriers will be removed or whether an unveiling has separate attendance arrangements.
The work between drawing and pavement
The official announcement identifies Hinode’s Saga factory in Miyaki as the manufacturer and explains that installation costs include surveys, applications and construction as well as the lid itself. That is an interesting part of the story: a piece of fan art in the street must also become a working public object.
When you eventually see a finished cover, look at how a character is translated into a surface meant to be viewed from above. Notice the silhouette first, then the lettering and spaces around it. The circular format invites a different kind of composition from a screen or a printed illustration.
You do not need to know every game reference to enjoy that exercise. A fan may recognize a pose immediately; a companion may notice the palette or the location first. Both ways of looking give you something to share.
Keep the next visit flexible
Use the prefecture’s announcement and the official Romancing Saga project site as the starting points for updates. Save the planned location, but choose another nearby purpose for your day as well. That leaves room to enjoy the city if a schedule changes.
For now, this is a story about how fans can help decide what appears in public space. The next chapter will be the completed covers themselves. We have not described either planned addition as already installed, and the dates above should not be read as an invitation to an unrestricted ceremony.
