When a quiet hobby becomes a gathering
Most manhole discoveries happen in passing. You stop, look down, perhaps take a photograph, and continue along the street. A summit changes that rhythm: here, the object everyone else walks over becomes the reason people have come together.
The 2026 event pairs manhole enthusiasm with a sewerage festival. It is a chance to connect the painted surface with the infrastructure below it, and to spend time looking at designs alongside people who notice the same details.
Put the right Arakawa in your plan
Saitama Prefecture identifies the venue as the rooftop park at Arakawa Water Circulation Center, 5-36-1 Sasame, Toda. Despite the event name, your destination is Toda in Saitama, not Tokyo’s Arakawa Ward.
Use the venue address when checking transport and follow the current event access instructions. Save the return journey too. With an afternoon event, it is worth deciding in advance whether you want to arrive for a particular activity or simply browse at a relaxed pace.
What is on the program
GKP’s September program includes municipal cover displays, relay talks, merchandise, cover-rubbing activities, and a display of Manhole Cards. The rubbing activity has a 3:30 p.m. final reception; materials and giveaways are limited.
There is also a photo mission: walk from Toda Station, photograph three designated covers on the day, and present the pictures at the venue. The walking-only requirement belongs to this mission; it should not be confused with a rule for every visitor.
Pick one activity you particularly want to do, then let the rest of the visit unfold around it. Comparing several covers together can reveal things a single street encounter hides: repeated flowers, contrasting lettering, different ways to fit an entire town into a circle.
A card exhibition is not a new-card release
The organizer’s notice is explicit about the absence of new Manhole Card distribution. Go for the displays and gathering, rather than expecting a newly released card. Any separate collecting trip should use the issuing municipality’s own counter information.
Outdoor attractions can change with the weather. Recheck the official program shortly before October 17, and read individual activity instructions if you plan to join one. Comfortable walking shoes and enough room in the day to wait or change plans will serve you better than an overfilled schedule.
This preview was checked on October 3. Its event dates and program describe a scheduled gathering, rather than an on-site report after it has taken place.
